Claude, made by Anthropic, and Gemini, made by Google, are general-purpose AI chat assistants. Both answer questions, draft and edit text, search the web, work with uploaded files and hold voice conversations. Both run on the web and in apps for iOS and Android, and both have a free plan. They differ most in images, file limits, price steps and what comes bundled. Gemini generates images and its Google AI plans add cloud storage. Claude does not generate images, takes bigger documents (500 MB a file, against Gemini's 100 MB) and includes Claude Code on every paid plan. Below, their plans, features and privacy settings are set side by side from Anthropic's and Google's own pricing and help pages.

Test 1: Correct five deliberate mistakes in a short notice
The task
Send this prompt in a new chat:
Correct the spelling and grammar mistakes in this notice. Do not change anything else. Then list each correction on its own line.
Fernhill Goods will be closed on Monday for it's yearly stock count. Orders placed over the weekend will ship on Tuesday. Their are three things to know: the phone line will be closed, emails will be answered on Tuesday, and the online store stays open. Every customer will recieve a email reminder on Friday. Thank you for you're patience.
How we judged it
The notice has exactly five mistakes: it's (its), Their (There), recieve (receive), a email (an email) and you're (your).
Pass: all five corrected, no other word changed, and a list of the five corrections.
Partial: four corrected; or all five, but with one other change or no list.
Fail: three or fewer corrected, or the meaning of the notice changed.
Claude
Pass
Fixed all five mistakes (its, There, receive, an email, your), changed nothing else and listed the five corrections.
Run signed in to both tools, in a Claude Incognito chat and a Gemini temporary chat so that neither used memory (custom instructions were empty). Claude ran on a Max account with Sonnet 5.5 selected, a model the Free plan offers; Gemini on a free Google account with Gemini Auto. Each prompt was sent once.
Test 2: Draw a labeled diagram of the water cycle
The task
Send this prompt in a new chat:
Make a simple labeled diagram of the water cycle with four stages: evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection. Show it as a picture, with arrows from each stage to the next and from collection back to evaporation.
How we judged it
Pass: a picture appears in the chat (or in a panel beside it) with all four stages, every label spelled correctly, and the arrows in the order asked for.
Partial: a picture with all four stages, but one label misspelled or missing or an arrow in the wrong place; or the picture appears only after an extra step, such as running code.
Fail: no picture, or two or more stages missing or unreadable.
Claude
Pass
A diagram drawn in the chat: four correctly spelled stages, arrows from each to the next and from collection back to evaporation.
Test 3: Look up a public fact with an official source (timed)
The task
Send this prompt in a new chat:
What is the current federal minimum wage in the United States, and since what date has it applied? Search the web and link the official government page you used.
How we judged it
On 2026-10-19 the U.S. Department of Labor's page said $7.25 per hour, effective July 24, 2009 (dol.gov).
Pass: $7.25 an hour, July 24, 2009, and a working link to a dol.gov page.
Partial: the right wage, but the date missing or wrong, or no link to an official (.gov) page.
Fail: a wrong wage presented as current, or no wage given.
The time is measured from sending the prompt until the answer stops appearing.
Claude: Winner
Pass 6 s
$7.25 an hour since July 24, 2009, linking the Department of Labor minimum-wage FAQ, which states both.
Times run from pressing Enter until the answer stopped changing, measured in the browser and rounded to the nearest second. Claude's account was on the paid Max plan, which may answer faster than the Free plan.
Our verdict
Claude suits work with large documents and code. A chat takes up to 20 files of up to 500 MB each, PDFs can run to 1,000 pages, and every paid plan includes Claude Code. Pro costs $20 a month ($200 billed yearly). The trade-offs: no photos or illustrations (only diagrams, charts and interactive visuals), no Opus models on the free plan, and Max ($100 or $200) is billed monthly only.
Gemini suits people who want pictures, Google storage or a low-priced upgrade. Even the free plan generates and edits images and includes Deep Research and Gemini Live. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage and Gemini in Gmail; Google AI Pro, at $19.99, has 5 TB, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and a 1-million-token context window. The trade-offs: 10 files per prompt, 100 MB per file (2 GB for video), and a 32k-token context window on the free plan.
Anthropic offers a training opt-out on Claude's individual plans and does not train on Team content by default. Gemini's opt-out means turning off Keep Activity, which also stops saving chats to your activity. For teams: Claude Team Standard, $25 a seat a month ($20 billed annually); Gemini Enterprise Business, from $21.
Large documents and code: Claude. Images and Google's apps: Gemini.
Choose Claude if
You want help with long documents, writing or code. Claude accepts up to 20 files per chat at up to 500 MB each, including PDFs of up to 1,000 pages, and every paid plan includes Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent. Pro costs $20 a month, or $200 billed yearly. It also fits a team of 2 to 150 people on Claude Team, whose content is not used for model training by default. Look elsewhere if you need image generation.
Choose Gemini if
You want images, Google storage or the lowest-priced upgrade. Gemini's free plan already generates and edits images and includes Deep Research, Gemini Live voice chats, Canvas and Gems. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage and Gemini in Gmail and Vids, and Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month has 5 TB of storage, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids, and a 1-million-token context window. It suits you best if your mail and files already live in Google.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude or Gemini cheaper?
Gemini has the cheaper first paid step: Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month and Google AI Pro $19.99 a month. Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $200 billed yearly ($17 a month). At the top end, Claude Max costs $100 or $200 a month, billed monthly only, and Google AI Ultra $99.99 or $199.99 a month. Both assistants also have a free plan.
Can Claude create images the way Gemini does?
No. Anthropic says Claude does not generate photos or illustrations; instead it can build diagrams, charts and interactive visuals with HTML and SVG, a beta feature on the web and desktop. Gemini generates and edits images, on the free plan as well as the paid ones. Video generation in Gemini needs a paid plan.
Which handles bigger files and longer documents?
Claude takes bigger documents and images: up to 500 MB per file, up to 20 files per chat, and PDFs of up to 1,000 pages. Gemini takes up to 10 files per prompt, each up to 100 MB, or up to 2 GB for a video. Google also lists Gemini's context window, the amount of text it can work with at once: 32k tokens without a paid plan, 128k on Google AI Plus and 1 million tokens on Google AI Pro and Ultra. Anthropic lists Claude's context window by model rather than by plan.
Do Claude and Gemini use my chats to train their models?
Both give you a way to opt out. Anthropic marks model training as opt-out on Claude's Free, Pro and Max plans and does not train on Team or Enterprise content by default. In Gemini, turning off Keep Activity stops Google from using your future chats to improve its AI models, unless you send feedback, but those chats are then kept for only 72 hours and are not saved to your activity.
Do Claude and Gemini have plans for teams?
Yes. Claude Team costs $25 per Standard seat a month, or $20 billed annually, for teams of 2 to 150; Premium seats cost $125, or $100 billed annually, with five times the Standard usage. Claude Enterprise is $20 per seat a month billed annually, with a 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates. Gemini Enterprise Business starts at $21 per seat a month for up to 300 seats, and Google lists Gemini Enterprise Standard and Plus from $30 per seat a month.
