Test 1: Summarise a public document in five bullet points

The task

Paste the full text of the U.S. Declaration of Independence (the transcript at archives.gov) into a new chat, after this prompt:

Summarise this document in exactly five bullet points for a busy reader. Keep every date and name that matters. Do not add anything that is not in the text.

How we judged it

Pass: exactly five bullet points; together they cover why the document was written, the main complaints and the declaration itself; nothing invented.

Partial: five bullet points, but one main part is missing or vague.

Fail: the wrong number of bullet points, a factual error, or anything that is not in the text.

Test 2: Solve a three-step word problem and show the working

The task

Send this prompt in a new chat:

A bakery sells muffins at $3.25 each and coffee at $2.80 a cup. On Monday it sold 40 muffins and 38 coffees. On Tuesday it sold 15% more muffins than on Monday and 10 fewer coffees. What was the total revenue for the two days? Show your working.

How we judged it

The right total is $464.30 (Monday $236.40, Tuesday $227.90).

Pass: the right total with every step shown.

Partial: the right method with one arithmetic slip, or the right total without the working.

Fail: a wrong method, or a wrong total presented as right.

Our verdict

For most people the choice comes down to where you already work. If your email, documents and photos live in Google, Gemini gives you more for a similar price: Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month, about the same as ChatGPT Plus at $20, but adds 5 TB of storage, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and a 1-million-token context window for long files. Google AI Plus at $4.99 is also the cheaper first paid step, and Gemini's free plan already includes image generation, Deep Research and Gemini Live.

ChatGPT is the stronger pick if you want a flexible standalone assistant. Its plans run from Go at $8 to Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500 a month, Plus adds advanced reasoning models and expanded deep research, and every individual plan lets you opt out of model training while your chats stay in your history. On Gemini, opting out means turning off Keep Activity, which also stops saving your chats to your activity.

For teams the two are close on price: ChatGPT Business costs $25 per user a month, or $20 billed annually, with a two-seat minimum, while Gemini Enterprise Business starts at $21 per seat for up to 300 seats. Pick the one that fits the tools your company already uses.

Choose ChatGPT if

You want a standalone assistant with a wide choice of plans: Go at $8 a month for higher limits, Plus at $20 for advanced reasoning models and expanded deep research, or a Pro tier at $100, $200 or $500 for heavy daily use. It also suits you if you want to opt out of model training without losing your chat history, or if your team wants ChatGPT Business at $20 per user a month billed annually.

Choose Gemini if

You already use Gmail, Google Docs and Google Drive and want the assistant built into them. Google AI Plus is the cheaper paid step at $4.99 a month, and Google AI Pro at $19.99 adds 5 TB of storage, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and a 1-million-token context window for long documents. The free plan already includes image generation, Deep Research and Gemini Live voice chats, so you can try them before paying.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT or Gemini cheaper?

Gemini's paid plans start lower. Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month and Google AI Pro $19.99 a month, while ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month and ChatGPT Plus $20 a month. Both have free plans. At the top end, Google AI Ultra costs $99.99 or $199.99 a month, and ChatGPT Pro comes in $100, $200 and $500 monthly tiers. ChatGPT's Go, Plus and Pro plans are billed monthly only.

Can both ChatGPT and Gemini search the web?

Yes. OpenAI says ChatGPT web search is available on every plan, including Free, and to people who are not signed in. Google says Gemini can always use public information from Google Search, even if Keep Activity is off or you are signed out.

Do ChatGPT and Gemini use my chats to train their models?

They can, but both let you opt out. In ChatGPT, turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls; your new chats are not used for training and still appear in your history, though a conversation you rate with a thumbs up or down may still be used. OpenAI also says it does not train on ChatGPT Business workspace data by default. In Gemini, turning off Keep Activity stops Google from using your future chats to improve its models (unless you send feedback), but those chats are then kept for only 72 hours and are not saved to your activity.

Which has the bigger context window for long documents?

Google lists a 32k-token context window for Gemini without a paid plan, 128k on Google AI Plus and 1 million tokens on Google AI Pro and Ultra. OpenAI lists a 27K total context window for GPT Instant on ChatGPT Free and 54K on Go and Plus, and 256K for its reasoning models on Go and Plus (400K on Pro). Of these plans, Google AI Pro and Ultra list the largest window.

Do ChatGPT and Gemini have plans for teams?

Yes. ChatGPT Business costs $25 per user a month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually, and needs at least two seats. Gemini Enterprise Business starts at $21 per seat a month for up to 300 seats. Larger organizations can contact sales about ChatGPT Enterprise, or about Gemini Enterprise Standard and Plus, which Google lists from $30 per seat a month.
