ProWritingAid has been around since 2013 and now presents itself as a complete toolkit for storytellers. Its core is a grammar checker and 25+ line-editing reports on readability, sticky sentences, pacing, dialogue and repetition. AI reports give story-level feedback: Chapter Critique, Manuscript, Plot, Character and Marketability Analysis, and a Virtual Beta Reader. Its help center names Rephrase and Sparks as the only generative AI tools, and the company says it never uses your writing to train its AI.

The Free plan checks 500 words at a time. Premium costs $30 a month or $120 a year, and Premium Pro, with 30 Chapter Critiques a day and live workshops, costs $36 a month or $144 a year; both also come as lifetime licenses. Teams cost $12 per user a month, billed yearly. Plagiarism checks and whole-manuscript analyses are paid for separately.

Best for

Novelists and other fiction writers who want detailed line editing and AI feedback on chapters and full manuscripts, rather than an AI that drafts marketing copy for them.

Pros

  • Free plan includes the grammar checker, 2 runs a day of each report and 10 Rephrases a day, on 500 words at a time
  • 25+ line-editing reports, from sticky sentences and pacing to dialogue and echoes
  • Yearly billing cuts Premium from $30 a month to $120 a year, and lifetime licenses start at $399
  • Works in Word, Google Docs and Scrivener, in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and through desktop apps for Windows and Mac
  • Says it never uses your writing to train its AI, and states SOC 2 compliance with EU and US hosting options

Cons

  • Not a content generator: it says it will never write your story for you, and Sparks is capped at 3 a day on Free and 5 on Premium
  • Plagiarism checks cost extra beyond 2 free at sign-up, from $10 for 10 checks of up to 2,000 words each
  • Manuscript, Plot, Character and Marketability analyses and the Virtual Beta Reader need Story Credits; a single credit costs $50 at full price, $35 on Premium and $25 on Premium Pro
  • No API (the help center says it is no longer offered), no iOS or Android app, and no SEO features listed
  • Monthly plans are not refundable; the 3-day money-back guarantee covers yearly and lifetime plans only
