Hemingway Editor is a readability editor created by Adam Long and Ben Long, and its web app has been online since 2013. The free online editor scores how readable your text is and highlights hard-to-read sentences, passive voice and words with simpler alternatives. Hemingway Editor Plus, the paid subscription, adds AI that rewrites flagged sentences, fixes grammar, changes tone or length, follows custom instructions and gives written feedback on a draft.
Plus plans are sized by monthly AI sentence credits. Individual 5K costs $25 a month or $100 a year, and Individual 10K costs $30 a month or $150 a year. Team 10K costs the same per user for up to 50 users, and the custom-priced Enterprise plan offers single sign-on as an add-on. A Microsoft Word add-in uses the same account. Hemingway says neither it nor its AI providers train AI models on your writing.
Best for
Writers and teams who draft their own text and want it shorter, plainer and easier to read, with optional AI fixes, rather than an AI that writes marketing copy from a brief.

- AI rewrites are capped at 5,000 or 10,000 sentences a month (20,000 per user on Enterprise), and unused credits do not carry over
- AI fixes and file import need Plus: in the free editor you rewrite highlighted sentences yourself
- No SOC 2 or ISO certification yet, according to its own security page
