Vultr is a cloud infrastructure provider founded in 2014. It rents shared and dedicated-CPU virtual servers, GPU instances, bare metal servers, managed databases, Kubernetes and S3-compatible object storage, and lists 33 data center regions, nine of them in the US.

Shared-CPU Cloud Compute starts at $2.50 a month for an IPv6-only server with 512 MB of memory; $5 a month buys 1 vCPU, 1 GB, 25 GB of SSD and 1 TB of transfer. High Performance and High Frequency plans with NVMe storage start at $6. Servers are billed by the hour, most of them capped at 672 hours a month, and a stopped server is billed until it is destroyed. Every account gets 2 TB of free outbound transfer a month on top of its servers' allowances. Automatic backups add 20% to an instance's price, and DDoS protection costs $10 a month per instance.

Best for

Developers and small teams who want low-cost servers in many US and global locations, with GPUs, managed databases and Kubernetes available from the same account.

Pros

  • 33 regions, nine in the US: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Miami, New Jersey, Seattle and Silicon Valley
  • Free Kubernetes control plane: you pay only for worker nodes, load balancers and block storage
  • 2 TB of free outbound transfer per account each month on top of each server's allowance; inbound traffic is not metered
  • Cloud GPUs billed by the hour from $0.471 an hour (one NVIDIA A16), with AMD and larger NVIDIA GPUs on the price list
  • Managed MySQL, PostgreSQL and Valkey from $15 a month, and Apache Kafka

Cons

  • DDoS protection is a paid add-on at $10 a month per instance
  • Automatic backups add 20% to the instance price
  • The $2.50 server is IPv6-only and, per Vultr's API, offered only in New Jersey and Atlanta
  • Stopped servers are billed until they are destroyed
  • Some locations cost more: the $5 server is $7.50 a month in São Paulo
