Sudowrite is an AI writing app for fiction, founded in 2020 by writers Amit Gupta and James Yu. Each project has a Story Bible that holds the synopsis, characters, worldbuilding and outline. Sudowrite draws on it to generate scenes and whole chapters, and other tools continue a passage, expand it, add sensory detail or rewrite it. Its own fiction models, Muse and Ballad, sit beside 30+ models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others.

The plans differ mainly in monthly credits. Hobby & Student costs $19 a month, or $10 a month billed yearly, for 225,000 credits. Professional ($29, or $22 billed yearly) has 1,000,000 credits and adds Feedback, an AI editor and beta reader. Max ($59, or $44 billed yearly) has 2,000,000 credits that roll over for up to 12 months. Every plan starts with a free trial that needs no credit card.

Best for

Novelists and other fiction writers who want AI help planning, drafting and revising long stories, with characters, plot and series continuity kept in context.

Pros

  • Story Bible keeps characters, worldbuilding and the outline in context when drafting scenes and chapters
  • Chat and Quick Edit use no credits by default; only their optional High Quality mode does
  • Its own fiction models, Muse and Ballad, plus 30+ models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others
  • Imports Word, RTF and ODT files and Scrivener projects, and exports .docx
  • Free trial with no credit card, and its FAQ says your writing is not used to train AI models

Cons

  • Credits do not map to words: Sudowrite's own example puts 1 million credits at 50,000 to 500,000 AI words
  • Credit use varies by model: in Sudowrite's example one 200-word Write took about 70 credits on GPT-5 Nano and over 8,000 on Claude 4.1 Opus
  • Feedback (developmental edits, line edits, beta reads) needs Professional or Max
  • Unused monthly credits expire at each refresh except on Max, where they roll over for up to 12 months
  • Built for fiction: no team plans or SEO features are listed, and sharing is view links with reader comments
