OpenCode is an MIT-licensed open source AI coding agent from Anomaly; its first public releases on GitHub date from May 2025. It runs as a terminal interface, a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, a web interface and extensions for VS Code, Cursor, Zed and other editors. The default Build agent edits files and runs shell commands, the Plan agent analyzes code and suggests changes without editing, and subagents can work in parallel.

The app is free. It connects to 75+ model providers through Models.dev, including local models, and you can sign in with a GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT Plus/Pro account. OpenCode also sells model access: Zen is pay as you go at the providers' prices plus a card fee, and Go costs $10 a month (Go Plus $40) for a curated model list, including Kimi, GLM, Qwen, DeepSeek and Claude Haiku. Enterprise is priced per seat.

Best for

Developers who want a free, open source coding agent in the terminal or a desktop app and want to choose their own models, from local models to a Copilot or ChatGPT subscription or pay-as-you-go API access.

Pros

  • Free and open source under the MIT License, with free models included at a quota of 200 requests a day
  • Works with 75+ model providers and local models, and signs in with GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT Plus/Pro accounts
  • Build and Plan agents, parallel subagents, and /undo, which rolls back file changes and the conversation together in a Git repository
  • Stores no code or context data except when you use its free models; Enterprise adds a central config, SSO and your internal AI gateway

Cons

  • By default the agent edits files and runs shell commands without asking; you add ask or deny rules yourself
  • Claude Pro/Max plugins are no longer bundled (since 1.3.0) because Anthropic prohibits that use; Claude needs an API key or another provider
  • Go and Go Plus are for one-person workspaces, with usage caps per 5 hours (20% of each model's monthly limit) and per week (50%)
  • Some free and discounted models may use your prompts for training (listed in the docs), so check before using them on private code
